More Kayak Equipment

  • Spray Deck

A spray deck or spray skirt fits around you and the opening on the kayak to keep the water out of the kayak and consists of an elasticated nylon or neoprene membrane.

  • Dry Bag

As the spray deck won’t keep out 100% of the water you will also need containers that will stow inside the kayak to keep your spare clothes and other equipment dry. These come in a variety of sizes and colours (useful for easily sorting your gear so you can get what you need more easily and without having to sift through everything else to get to what you want).

  • Buoyancy Bags

Because you will never keep all the water out, buoyancy bags are also needed and can fit either end of the sea kayak.

  • Helmet

Depending on the type of water you will be crossing (particularly if there are elements of heavy swell or white water) a helmet is a good safety addition.

  • First aid and survival

In addition to the emergency devices on the PFD, you should have a basic first aid kit and flares easily accessible.

  • Compass

A useful addition for sea navigation and steering, a compass can be added either deck mounted or detachable, with some having built in illumination.
