Great Locations for Whitewater Rafting

As we have discussed you should choose a river that matches your levels of competence. That said, there are some wonderful whitewater rivers and river trips of varying difficulty and duration. Here are some suggestions:

New Zealand

The Kramea River / Richmond

This river runs through the Kahurangi National Park, beneath Mount Cobb. A 3 day excursion will cover the main parts of the river which has rapids with names such as Scare-case and the Roaring Lion.

Best time of year is October to April; Grade 4 with some Grade 5 whitewater

New Zealand

Kaituna River/ Rotorua

In the North Island this river boasts a 7 m high waterfall and a total of 14 drops in the space of 45 minutes!

This whitewater run can be covered in about an hour and is graded 4-5. Available all year round

Australia

Tully River / Queensland

This river, graded 4-5 can be covered in about 5 hours in which you will experience 45 rapids

Available all year

Africa

Orange River / Namibia / South Africa

The whitewater is to be found as this river enters the Kalahari Desert.

A 1-2 day trip will see the best of this grade 3-4 river
