Tents

There are a great variety of tents on the market and the technology has advanced significantly from the image of the basic ridge tent that most people will conjure up when they think of tents.

So what should you consider when selecting a tent?

There are three main considerations:

  • Your budget
  • The situations and localities it will be used in
  • The number of people that need to be accommodated in your new tent

Let’s look at these in a little more detail:

Budget is obviously important as there is no point in selecting the top of the range super lightweight tent incorporating the latest technology if all you want to spend will get you a basic model. Setting out this parameter first may reduce the time and effort you need to spend researching the other criteria when looking for your tent.

For locations you should consider if you will use the tent in hot or cold locations, wet or dry, if there will be heavy snow, wind or rain. If you will be trekking with it, and therefore needing to carry it long distances, you will want something more lightweight than if you are using it for family holidays and transporting it by car.

Finally the number of people and the storage requirements will determine the size of tent you buy. For mountaineering or trekking you may require a small functional tent, whereas for family trips a tent with several sleeping compartments and a separate living area may be more suitable.
