Caribbean Sailing Vacations

The Leeward Islands

The Leeward Islands provide a mix of British, Dutch, French and West Indian cultures. Although there are the larger Islands of Anguilla, St. Barts, St. Kitts, St. Martin, Guadeloupe and Dominica, there are also areas of open water that are not found in the Virgin Islands.

The Island of Anguilla is British owned and largely undeveloped, whereas St Martin provides a mix of French and Dutch cultures split by the two Nations in the seventeenth century. As such there are two capitals, Philipsburg on the Dutch side of the Island and Marigot on the French.

Antigua also retains a British influence, with English Harbour the main charter center for the Island. Early spring sees the annual Antigua Race Week which draws people from all around for sailing during the day and festivities after. There are also a variety of other beaches and coves to explore.

Guadeloupe, the butterfly island, comprises two islands, with one of them, Basse Terre, a 60,000 acre National Park with 300 foot high waterfall and underwater park. If you are looking for the truly exotic, the about 5 hours away is Dominica, a tropical rainforest island with a mile high mountain and hundreds of rivers to explore.
