Windward Islands and The Grenadines

The Windward Islands, as their name suggests, offer some of the stronger winds for sailors in the Caribbean. Split by the British for mainly governmental reasons, the islands of the Lesser Antilles became the Leeward and the Windward Islands

Although part of the Windward Islands, you may find charter listings for The Grenadines split by the charter companies into their own category.

The volcanic island of Martinique is characterized by Mount Pelee, which last erupted in 1902, located at the South end. There are however plenty of towns on this French owned island where you can enjoy a relaxing stop-over on your trip.

Anse d’Arlet is typical, where you can stay in front of a French fishing village; Mitan has beach restaurants whilst Sainte Anne has an array of shops for those looking for provisions or souvenirs.

St Lucia is a well established charter base and a beautiful island as well.

The Grenadines run up from Grenada to St Vincent and also contain main nice anchorages and some charter companies offer the option of a one way charter so you can see all of the area without having to return the boat to your starting point at the end of your sailing vacation.

Of note amongst the islands are Mustique, where the rich and famous (including Mick Jagger and Princess Margaret) have homes. Off the North coast, the wreck of the liner Antilles makes for good (if more advanced) diving.

The four uninhabited islands of the Tobago Cays have wonderful beaches and coves to explore and many charterers can send an entire vacation here.

Grenada, known as the Spice Island, is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, with it’s capital, St. George’s widely held to be the loveliest city. Like the other islands there are coral reefs and beaches make this island well worth a stop over.
