Situated at the base of Mt Meru, the town of Arusha is further from Kilimanjaro than other towns it remains the main base for arranging treks. You will find provisioning shops and campsites, hotels and restaurants

There is an office of the Tanzania Tourist Board here and they keep lists of licensed trekking operators as well as being able to provide advice on companies not to use

In the vicinity you will also find Arusha National Park and the volcanic crater of Mt Meru, also worth climbing if you have the time (a 4 day trip which can also be organized in Arusha).

The middle of December to the end of February is possibly the best and most popular time for Kilimanjaro treks (this is the warm, dry season) but June to October (although cooler) is still popular. June to October is still dry, to the extent that many rivers dry up and should not be relied upon for water. April is the wettest month and should be avoided.
